Low Pressure Sewer Systems (LPS) Incorporating Grinder Package Systems Offer Cost Effective Solutions for Cities
Municipalities may choose to invest in a low pressure sewer system (LPS) as an alternative to using gravity sewers or septic tanks. Low pressure sewer systems (LPS) are low-head pressure waste water collection and treatment. The low pressure sewer system (LPS) is built with an interceptor tank and a chamber unit, which contains a submersible electric pump.
The low pressure sewer system (LPS) is ideal to design a grinder package system with it, as each unit requires its own grinder pump to turn solids into effluent that can be pumped to the municipal waste water treatment facility.
The low pressure tank is installed, in a similar manner to septic tanks, below ground. What results is energy-free organic waste treatment in the interceptor tank. The effluent is then pumped with the grinder package system to the wastewater treatment plant.
Although low pressure sewer systems (LPS) have been around since the late 70’s, cities may want to pay more attention to their significant advantages, considering today’s economic challenges. Low pressure sewer systems (LPS) are much cheaper to install. They can be installed by the side of roads, which means streets are not torn up and expensive road work is avoided. Low pressure sewer systems (LPS) use smaller pressure mains, usually two to four inches, and do not require central pumping stations. Environmentally, they have less potential for inflow and infiltration.
The sizing of sewer mains is critical in a low pressure sewer system as two (2) f/s velocity is required to keep solids from settling out.
The low pressure sewer system is perfect for grinderpackage systems to be included in the design, since each residence in the system requires its own submersible grinder pump to make the system work efficiently. Femeyers has the engineering capacity to design the grinder package systems to work efficiently with the low pressure sewer system (LPS) concept, and to deliver high quality pumping action.
The low pressure sewer system must have certain products eliminated from its use: no feminine hygiene products of any kind, no plastic or rubber of any kind, no cigarette butts, no grease or cooking oil, no coffee grounds and other inorganic materials, no excessive amounts of non-dissolving paper products, such as paper towels, no excessive use of laundry detergent or soaps, human or pet hair, cloth of any kind.
